PICTURES CAN BE DECEIVING!
Make sure you measure!
Most of us do not have a 2400 sq ft loft in Soho and if you did, you probably wouldn't be fishing on Craigslist for furniture. So knowing you have a spatially challenged place to furnish, please make sure you know the dimensions of the piece you are considering before you come in to see it.
Do you know how embarrassing it is when someone comes in to look at one of our pieces and says "oh my god, I didn't realize how small it is!"
Keep in mind that we try to take pictures of each piece as close as possible so you can see it, which often is at the expense of perspective, but that is why we provide dimensions of each piece. So get out your tape measure and see if that piece fits first!
We Hate Antiques
I wanted to talk about our philosophy a little bit and why we decided to call our business "Furnish Green."
I mean, it's not like we are growing pieces on a local farm like our logo suggests. Although we strive to use green non-toxic products to clean and paint with, we are really no more than an average furniture dealer. However, we are not antique dealers, as a matter of fact, we sell mostly mass produced, very well made furniture from 1890-1970. We strive to sell functional pieces of furniture: desks, dressers, tables, chairs, mirrors, etc. Furniture that people use, especially for New York living, not furniture people just look at.
I actually learned a lot about furniture from an antique dealer, but as I got into the business, I realized calling something an "antique" was just an excuse to charge more money for a piece. There is an old adage in the antique business "if a piece doesn't sell, charge more money" meaning if you charge more money, people that collect antiques might see it as more valuable and be more inclined to buy it.
When we describe one of our pieces as "antique" we are simply trying to describe whatever history we know behind a piece. But we are still pricing our pieces for their furniture value, and never their "antique" value, while trying to reduce our carbon-footprint.Thanks for supporting Furnish Green.
FG Loves Earth Safe Finishes
Hi Eveyone,
I was searching a company that deals with eco friendly paint and finishes and discovered Generation Green, an Earth Safe Finished company located in Moorpark, California. We contacted them immediately and they were nice enough to send us eco-friendly paints, stains, finishes and sealers that I am going to try out over the next couple of weeks. All of their products contain no or low VOC's (volitale orgainc compounds).
For those of you that do not know what VOCs are, they are what helps paints and finishes dry quickly from a liquid to a solid. When it evporates it gasses which can continue months after the paint is dry. I will keep you posted about what we think of the products. In the meantime, you are welcome to check their webiste at:
http://www.earthsafefinishes.com/. Check them out!
